ANNA LINDH EDUCATION UNITThe Education and Youth unit of the Anna Lindh Foundation has the pleasure to inform you about its next activity directed at youths of the Euro-Mediterranean area in the field of Conflict Resolution and Human Rights Education. A joint programme of the Anna Lindh Foundation, Council of Europe, and the European Centre for Youth of Budapest. As a follow-up to previous Euro-Mediterranean Youth Workshops organised in 2007, a Handbook compiling good practices (theoretical background and practical exercises) for trainers on Conflict Resolutions and Cultural Cooperation is being elaborated and published in three languages (English, French and Arabic). In the frame of the successful cooperation and partnership on Youth between the European Commission and the Council of Europe for promoting European Citizenship, Human Rights Education and Intercultural Dialogue, the decision came to convey a common training course where the conceptual aspects and use of this handbook would be introduced to a larger audience of young Euro Mediterranean workers and trainers along with a complementary component on Human Rights Education, made possible thanks to the long term expertise of the Council of Europe in this field. The training will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 19 to 26 October 2008. Over a period of six training days, half will focus mainly on the tools developed for dealing with conflict situations, the rest of the period being dedicated to introducing other training tools developed by the council of Europe on related matters, to exploring potential linkages and partnerships and to developing projects between participants and their respective organisations as well as methodological frameworks for the organization of activities at the local level. Among the outcomes of the training course, the ALF-CoE partnership expects the participants to have acquired accrued competences in human rights education, intercultural dialogue, and in issues and techniques related to the notion of conflict, to have established contacts and increased their motivation to work and to contribute to the follow-up of this thematic component of the Euromed partnership by creating multiplying activities and diffusing their effort among their local communities, national networks and professional contacts. >From all these efforts, the Anna Lindh Foundation aims at facilitating access to examples, tools and material that represent good practices for conflict resolution in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Participation to the above training is reserved for young people (aged 18-30) of the eligible countries of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. The participation to the training is subject to a selection process held commonly by the co-organisers and following the details specified in the call for participants and the application form. Costs of the selected participants will be covered by the co-organisers as per specified in the call. Brief about (GCAP):
GCAP will be a five-day seminar that will include a wide range of activities, to best address the varied objectives of GCAP. It will include training session's focused on knowledge and best practices sharing, community development techniques, as well as intercultural exchange. The seminar will focus on how to improve on children's rights. The seminar has several objectives which are: 1. Strengthening partnership, within the YOUTH program, between participating organizations. 2. Including young people with fewer opportunities from undeserved and underrepresented areas. 3. Empowering youth with need knowledge and skills to become active citizens in their communities in the field of child safety and children rights. More specifically, upon completing the seminar, participants will: 1. Think of themselves as a cohesive group with common goals, and appreciate that GCAP members can serve as resources for one another. 2. Have an accurate assessment of their current position. 3. Have a specific, quantifiable answer to the question, 'what do we want to have accomplished by 2011 in relation to child safety and children rights in our countries'? 4. Have a set of basic conceptual 'tools' with which to achieve those goals. 5. Have increased confidence in their abilities. Partner organizations will be involved in GCAP at two levels: - In phase I they will be responsible primarily to nominate youth from their country to represent and participate in Amman seminar with a youth leader and to prepare for its training, experience sharing session to be delivered to participants during the seminar. - In phase II, each participating NGOs will be profoundly involved and responsible to provide a framework within which to organize a youth exchange and to implement a local community service project in its country. JRF will naturally, look to them for ideas and feedback on the success of the project as it is being implemented. The seminar will include the following activities: 1. Exchange of Knowledge and Experiences: The seminar will hold share-of-knowledge and best practices training sessions conducted by participating organizations where each organization will:
• Introduce their organization; a brief history about the organization, its mission, vision, objectives and programs
• Discuss their experience in the field of youth participation and active citizenship, exchange, volunteer projects and child safety;
• Share their knowledge on intercultural and community development topics related to the project needed to enable youth and empower them to become active citizens in promoting child safety concepts in different countries ( The topics will be provided by the partners) e.g., different skills needed for youth participation, child safety concepts and intercultural communication; • Encourage participants to discuss, ask questions or comment on these topics
2. Designing action plan for phase II: Following training sessions, participants will join forces to develop and design the action plan for phase II of GCAP including exchanges and community service projects. To achieve this, Youth participants will engage in the following activities:
• Assessing the current situation: Their individual strengths and abilities, the strengths and abilities of their NGO's, and the strengths and abilities of the group as a whole and also assessing the needs of each country in the role of youth to promote child safety; • Outlining the desired future, outcomes and impact of GCAP on issues related to youth participation in promoting child safety; • Comparing between the current status of youth's role and the desired direction of GCAP to improve and take youth participation to a more advanced level;
• Setting goals for the future: participants will give specific, quantifiable objectives to be accomplished by 2011 in relation to child safety and children rights in their countries (It is the difference between where project participants are and where they want to be which will constitute the subsequent objectives of the project.)
Participating organizations are expected to provide a provisional framework and an action plan for the implementation of Phase II in their countries including hosting the exchange and implementing a local community service project to activate youth's role in promoting child safety.
3. Intercultural dialogue:
An important purpose of this seminar is to promote intercultural interaction between young people from different parts of the Euro-Mediterranean region. The seminar will include an intercultural learning session within the training sessions. The objective of this will be to introduce participants to basic concepts and to raise their awareness of the role of culture and the power of cultural norms. If time permits and there is interest among the participants, we will move on to a discussion of how cultural norms and sensitivity towards the power of culture can be used positively in the implementation of community development projects. Participants will engage in several discussions on topics related mainly to youth participation, active citizenship, intercultural communication, and child safety. This will contribute in the development of youth participants and will provide them with the needed tools to become active members in the community. Through engaging in such multicultural discussions, participants will increase respect for and appreciation of cultural diversity and learn accept the other and appreciate what he/she has to offer which will in turn help them in thinking of themselves as a one cohesive group working to achieve a common purpose.
4. Introducing and educating participants about the Jordanian culture and child safety in Jordan. During the four day Seminar youth will visit:
• One or two organizations concerned with child safety and child rights in Jordan. Throughout these visits youth participants will learn about different organizations which support child safety and children rights and learn about tools used to promote child safety. These visits will increase participant's knowledge and raise their awareness about child safety and children rights, consequently help them in developing the action plan for the second phase of the project and will motivate them to work towards achieving the objectives of GCAP.
• Historical locations in Jordan
Participants will visit historical locations in Jordan which will serve many purposes including introducing them to the Jordanian culture, a method of entertainment and as a reward for their hard work during the seminar. Throughout these visits, participants will get to know more about the Middle East region in general and Jordan in particular in addition to getting to know each other at a deeper level. This will impact their performance.
